Welcome to Animal Art by Elena Magaña. I'm a Mexican artist specializing in the colored pencil art technique. I love bringing life to your favorite animal through my art. Just follow the steps on this page to request a custom pet or animal portrait.

1. Select a great photo

My work is based on the photo, so taking the perfect photo is one of the most important parts of the process.  If you already have one in mind, that's great! If not here are some tips to take a great photo of your pet or animal.

  • Lighting

    Pay attention to the lighting. Natural light often brings out the most detail and color. 

    Try taking the photo outside or near a window so that you have the best natural lighting.

  • Setting

    Take advantage of moments when your pet is calm and respectful. Have treats or toys ready, to keep them from wandering off!

    Try to capture your pet's personality, remember that the setting is key in this. 

  • Framing

    Shoot at eye level, and close enough that your pet fills most of the frame. Avoid taking the photo from far away.

  • Detail

    Hold the camera as steadily as you can, for a nice sharp image. Avoid out-of-focus photographs that will not allow you to appreciate the details. 

  • Character

    Try to capture the character and natural expression. The color of the eyes and hair must look as in real life. Also, your picture should let the detail of the coat be seen. 

  • What happens if I want the portrait of a transcended animal?

    Don't worry! Send me the photos you already have to work with what you have.

3. What to expect

I will guide you step by step in selecting the best picture for your animal portrait.
We will have open communication while your portrait is in process (2-4 weeks). I'll send you pictures, videos, and updates.

Since I want you to have the highest quality art portrait I take my time in painting each custom piece. Bear in mind I may have a waitlist or several orders ahead of yours.


After you submit this form, I will get in touch with you for a custom quote, estimate delivery dates and shipping fee.

Frequently Ask Questions

  • What are the types of payments?

    I ask 50% to start the project and 50% once I finish the portrait. You can pay via PayPal or direct deposit.

  • Where do you ship?

    I can ship your portrait worlwide. Internation shipping costs $30 USD.

  • How are the portraits delivered?

    The small portraits come with a simple white or black frame ready for you to display however you want. You can easily change the frame if you want to.


    The medium and large portraits go with a mat board in a cellophane envelope for its protection without a frame.


    All portraits are wrapped in a bubble envelope or box with their authenticity certificate and their care guide. 

  • How long does the process take?

    I may have a waitlist so as soon as you fill out the form I will get in touch to tell you estimated delivery dates.
